Students listening to music while working on their assignments.

Music is a powerful art form that can bring up emotions and play with your mood. Most students, including me, listen to music while we study to make the process more fun. The big question is, should music be allowed while we do our assignment or is it just a distraction?

Most teachers don’t let us listen to music because they think it distracts us but scientific research is bringing up conflicting answers. Most studies say it’s a distraction however there are studies that say music increases your motivation. Also,  university professor Clifford Nass says that different kinds of music should be listened when performing different tasks. For example, it is believed that musicwith lyrics can distract while a student is working on writing an essay due to the crowdedness of words. In my opinion, an individual will know that they are getting distracted from their studies and will stop their music if they really want to study.

In conclusion, all students should be given the right to listen to music but should be self-conscious about their studies and assignments. If teachers find music distracting or find out that students are not doing their work properly they should be able to have the right to take it away. Basically this topic should be more about self-control rather than involving the teachers when students are working individually.
